Journal++
How I use Breakpoint (almost) every day
My Problem with Journaling
Everyone talks about the benefits of keeping a journal, especially at the same time every day. That routine never worked for me. Every time I tried to force myself, I’d eventually skip a day, feel guilty, then skip another. The pressure became counterproductive. Didn't want to, but I would quietly and slowly quit, rationalizing it so I didn't feel bad.
Discovering a New Way
Then I found Logseq. It was this super-nerdy tool that let me capture everything — notes on articles I read, to-do lists, random thoughts, and yes, journaling. It had powerful search, which simplified my life. 🤓💚 I just left it open all day, which made it pretty easy to jot down anything on my mind, with no pressure to be perfect.
I loved the daily headers — just pop in to write something small. Sometimes it’d grow into a real entry when I randomly got into the flow of throwing down my stream of conscious. Looking back, I realized it was this freedom and gentle encouragement that got me going.
It felt good to see all that (sloppy, unorganized, raw) writing.
Why I Built Breakpoint
As an eager user of AI, I would copy + paste stuff from my journal into ChatGPT. Then just ask it what it thought. No plan, no agenda, just kinda curious to see what came out the other end.
The “just jot it down” simplicity combined surprisingly well with the thoughts (?) from the AI. These experiments, over the course of a year, inspired me to package it up into useful box. That box was codenamed Kintsugi, and now lives as Breakpoint.
I built it mobile web so I have The Default Place™ — literally just one text box, on both my laptop and phone — that I capture my raw thoughts.
I don't feel any pressure about length or timing. I don't feel bad missing a day. What's really cool too, the more you write, the more your assistant learns about you.
A Thoughtful Morning Assistant
Sometimes chat is really nice. But sometimes you need to let the thoughts simmer. You need to sleep on it (as my dad very often advised). Your brain keeps working on these things. And when you come back to them, you're able to learn something new you couldn't quite see when it was so fresh.
Breakpoint Journal++ operates this way. Aligned with our natural circadian rhythm. Today's entry sets with the sun, and tomorrow the sun will rise.
While tomorrow is a new day, it's not just a blank page.
A personalized note will greet you the next day. The assistant reflects on your previous updates, therapy sessions, and any chats you’ve had, then sends a “good morning” tailored to your context. I love reading it during my morning routine — coffee and Wordle. Later I'll usually take a walk and revisit some of those ideas.
No Pressure
There’s absolutely no requirement to journal daily. This isn’t homework. Some days, the words will flow; other days, 😖. That’s fine. Even short entries accumulate over time, giving you a way to see how you’re doing when you look back.
Join Me in Making It Better?
I’m still finding the perfect balance for Breakpoint’s daily notes—when they appear, how they feel, and what kind of inspiration they spark. I’d love your input. Which notes resonate with you? Would you like to get notifications at random times or on a schedule? Should they be delivered via push or email?
